Cooking Shaped by Place, Family, and Time

Jonathan’s cooking is shaped by a life spent gathering people around the table — from growing up in Mississippi, to formal culinary training in California, to years of cooking and living in Tennessee, and deep family ties to Malaysia through marriage. These places come together naturally in his kitchen, creating food that feels generous, comforting, and deeply familiar. Jonathan’s menus reflect a lifetime spent cooking near water and around family tables, where patience, depth, and generosity matter more than novelty.

Rather than offering endless choices, Jonathan cooks from a trusted repertoire of dishes he knows well and returns to often — food that brings ease to the table and allows guests to settle in, relax, and enjoy one another’s company. The menus below offer a sense of the flavors and preparations that define his work and the kind of experience guests can expect.

A Southern & Malaysian Table

Two traditions sit easily side by side in Jonathan’s cooking, each grounded in warmth, patience, and food meant to be shared

Southern Foundations

Rooted in the food Jonathan grew up with, these dishes are soulful, comforting, and deeply satisfying — the kind of cooking that invites people to linger.

Gumbo and étouffée built slowly from a dark, aromatic roux, layered for deep, comforting flavor meant to be shared and lingered over.

  • Gumbo and étouffée, slowly built and thoughtfully seasoned

  • Biscuits and hush puppies, warm and familiar at the table

  • Vegetable sides drawn from Southern tradition, including black-eyed peas, cabbage, collard greens, and fried okra

Malaysian Influences

Shaped by family, travel, and time spent cooking for loved ones, Jonathan’s Malaysian-inspired dishes emphasize balance and depth, with warmth that feels inviting and not overwhelming.

Warm, aromatic curries and shared plates shaped by balance and depth, designed to feel inviting and satisfying rather than intense.

  • Curries range from gently spiced, comforting preparations to deeper, rendang-inspired dishes, slow-cooked for richness, balance, and warmth.

  • Roti canai or Malaysian flat bread, griddled and layered, served warm with dhal or curry

  • Chicken satay paired with rich, house-made peanut sauce

A Sweet Finish

Banana foster–style desserts, warm and gently flambéed, offering a familiar and comforting close to the meal.

Menus are shaped by season, availability, and Jonathan’s established repertoire, allowing each gathering to unfold naturally.
